Workshop: Intro to Arduino Synth Design with Kacper Ziemianin at iii

    Skills covered:

    – hardware: components and tools
    – software: Arduino IDE, fritzing
    – soldering, prototyping, reading schematics
    – having fun with other nerds
    Requirements:

    – 5V USB power supply + a USB C Cable (phone chargers work well)
    – creativity, open eyes and ears
    – laptop with Arduino software installed

    Workshop description

This workshop grew from more than a decade of experience in instrument design on one hand and giving DIY electronics workshops on another. During the workshop we will make an instrument called μLSe, an Arduino-based instrument that transforms light patterns into sound in the simplest possible way. By following this process we will learn various aspects of instrument design. We will start with an introduction to DIY electronics and talk about the skills and tools involved. We will then implement what we’ve learnt by putting the device together, connecting it to the computer, uploading code and making sure it works (troubleshooting). Finally we will look at ways to change how the instrument behaves by altering the code. We will also look at examples of artworks utilizing the Arduino platform, discuss projects ideas and how to make them into reality.

    More about μLSe

μLSe is the younger sibling of LSe (Light Sequencer) instrument which uses complex light sequences to generate and control sound. While the original LSe is powerful, it’s also costly and time-consuming to build. μLSe keeps the core concept of transforming light patterns into sound in a simplest possible way.

    The device features:

    – 2 RGB LEDs and 2 light sensors for creating interactive light/sound patterns
    – 2 buttons to switch sound and light modes
    – A mini speaker (or piezo) for built-in audio playback and a 3.5mm jack for external audio output

  • Workshop: Sound Poetry and Extended Vocal Techniques with Jaap Blonk at iii

Workshop: Sound Poetry and Extended Vocal Techniques with Jaap Blonk at iii

    Who is this for?

A workshop for anyone who wants to explore the inner depths and outer reaches of voice, text, music and sound in an exploratory improvisational framework.

Some vocal ability and the willingness to improvise and explore are the only prerequisites. We will work in a playful way, using games and improvisational structures. Sometimes we will use short sound poems from the history of that genre and work on interpretations of them.

    About the workshop

Sound Poetry and Extended Vocal Techniques with Jaap Blonk

As a start, Jaap Blonk will give a short introduction to sound poetry, presenting and demonstrating some historical works as well as his own scores.

Working collaboratively, participants will develop materials and strategies for pushing formal and conceptual boundaries to create improvisational compositions. Along the way, we will encounter and practice many extended vocal techniques, and learn which might cause damage to the voice and which don’t.

We will also go into notation possibilities and writing strategies.

    About Jaap Blonk:

Jaap Blonk (born 1953 in Woerden, Netherlands) is a self-taught composer, performer, poet and visual artist. His unfinished studies in mathematics and musicology mainly created a penchant for activities in a Dada vein, as did several unsuccessful jobs in offices and other well-organized systems.

In the early 1980s he discovered the power and flexibility of his voice, and set out on a long-term research of phonetics and the possibilities of the human voice. At present, he has developed into a specialist in the creation and performance of sound poetry and a unique vocal improviser, supported by a powerful and uninhibited stage presence. He has performed and taught around the world, on all continents. With the use of live electronics and sometimes projection of visuals the scope and range of his concerts has acquired a considerable extension.

Blonk’s recorded / published output comprises some 75 titles: CDs, vinyl, cassettes and books. From his sound poetry scores he developed an independent body of visual work, also supported by his renewed interest in mathematical procedures. It has been exhibited in various countries, and selections have been collected in books by publishers in Germany, Ireland, Canada, the United States, Sweden and Brazil.

Rodrigues is also a teacher at the KABK, Royal Academy of Art, The Hague and is the most recent member of iii.

  • Workshop Field Notes: Making paper, making place with Akash Kumar at iii

This workshop is open to all; no prior experience necessary. Come ready to experiment, get your hands messy, and explore what it means to make with what’s already here!

What participants should bring with them
    Found or personal materials:
    – Small natural materials: dried leaves, flowers, grass, seed pods, or food scraps
    – Personal fragments: old handwritten notes, fabric offcuts, thread, newspaper, receipts, etc. (These can be pulped into paper or collaged into pages.)

This is a hands-on workshop that explores the ecology of making through foraging, papermaking, and bookbinding. Together, we’ll gather materials from the landscape around iii, from algae to garden waste, and combine them with personal contributions brought by participants. Through experimental techniques, we’ll transform these found and foraged elements into handmade sheets of paper.

As the workshop unfolds, we will work with various raw materials of paper. In the final session, we will collectively stitch together a booklet, a tactile archive of place, process, and collaboration. Each page will carry a memory of material, site, and the hands that shaped it.

What participants will leave the workshop with

Participants will leave the workshop with a handmade booklet created from foraged and personal materials, stitched together as a collective record of place and process. Alongside their unique book, new skills in papermaking and bookbinding, and a deeper awareness of how the local environment can be transformed into meaningful artistic material. More than just objects, they’ll carry the shared experience of making, experimenting, and connecting with others through natural and found elements.

Part 2: The Clock Roulette Music Production Game

Afer the talk, we’ll start a music-making game. Here’s how it works:

    – Everyone brings their own device with a music production app (laptop, phone, tablet, etc.) and sits at a shared table.
    – When the timer starts, each person begins working on a short track using their own setup.
    – Every 10 minutes, a bell rings and everyone rotates to the next device.
    – You continue developing the track started by someone else.
    – This continues until everyone returns to their original project, but now completely reshaped by the group.
