Event: Not to be Senseless – Sound & Colour at iii

‘Not to be Senseless’ is a stage for neurodivergent art with people and pieces that experience and explore neurodivergencies such as synaesthesia, savantism and autism. This accessible event opens up new perspectives by recognising differences in how we sense the world. Organized by iii in collaboration with Journey Through the Senses, curated by Maria Oosterveen.

    Workshop description

This workshop grew from more than a decade of experience in instrument design on one hand and giving DIY electronics workshops on another. During the workshop we will make an instrument called μLSe, an Arduino-based instrument that transforms light patterns into sound in the simplest possible way. By following this process we will learn various aspects of instrument design. We will start with an introduction to DIY electronics and talk about the skills and tools involved. We will then implement what we’ve learnt by putting the device together, connecting it to the computer, uploading code and making sure it works (troubleshooting). Finally we will look at ways to change how the instrument behaves by altering the code. We will also look at examples of artworks utilizing the Arduino platform, discuss projects ideas and how to make them into reality.

    More about μLSe

μLSe is the younger sibling of LSe (Light Sequencer) instrument which uses complex light sequences to generate and control sound. While the original LSe is powerful, it’s also costly and time-consuming to build. μLSe keeps the core concept of transforming light patterns into sound in a simplest possible way.

    The device features:

    – 2 RGB LEDs and 2 light sensors for creating interactive light/sound patterns
    – 2 buttons to switch sound and light modes
    – A mini speaker (or piezo) for built-in audio playback and a 3.5mm jack for external audio output
