Blaudruck, an intangible heritage, is more than a printing technique, it is a living archive of stories embedded in the rhythm of craft. Using carved wooden blocks, craftspeople print patterns in a dye-resistant paste onto fabric, which is then immersed in indigo to reveal delicate white motifs on deep blue. On the surface, it may appear simple: stamp, dye, unveil. Yet beneath this lies a choreography of precision, patience, and knowledge passed from hand to hand over generations.

This project spans two summer seasons of material and embodied research, exploring how heritage knowledge can be carried into a contemporary context without losing its essence. The process involved cultivating woad (Isatis tinctoria) and Japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria), developing dye-resistant pastes from locally sourced and abundant materials in the Netherlands, and adapting these methods for silkscreen printing.

The research moved beyond colour into the social, historical, and cultural dimensions of Blaudruck. It opened conversations with expert practitioners, led to collaborative experiments with women whose practices are rooted in care and craft, and bridged traditional plant-based dyeing with contemporary making. Here, blue is not only a pigment, it is a relationship with plants, place, and tradition.

  • Soft Systems at EnergieKas

Soft Systems – Arno van Emmerik, Johanna Fuld, Jesse Greulich, Laboratory for Microclimates (Annechien Meier and Joost Suasso), Studio Metaform (Emma Little and Kaj Boonstra) in collaboration with Doina Mani
    experienced through poetic technology

In Soft Systems, technology is not positioned in opposition to nature or the body, but is understood as an intrinsic part of both. Here, systems are soft and interfaces porous. Five works explore how art, ecology, and science form temporary alliances in which technology does not direct, but connects.

The sound installation The City Condensed transforms the pulse of urban life into a tactile, poetic soundscape, with exciters setting the entire space into vibration. The audiovisual work Singing Soil uses nematode data to reveal—through sound and image—the impact of land use on underground life. At the Duckweed Farm, visitors are invited to taste drinks made from protein-rich duckweed, opening up new flavors and sustainable practices. In the Aloe Vera Performance (8:30 PM), bodily care becomes an act of activism, with the plant assuming the role of a soothing ally. The project Blaudruck presents hand-extracted indigo and woad pigments printed on textiles. Their deep blue tones carry histories of labor, ecology, and cultural memory. This evening, you can create a small print yourself.
