What might grief for systemic injustice make possible? How does loss move between individual and collective bodies?
During this event, Hannah Pezzack will read from a selection of her poetic work, including her Open Letter “To All the Caged Creatures of This World”. Moving between intimacy and address, her writing situates personal experience within broader structures of inequality.
The reading will be followed by a talk by Camille Sapara Barton, author of the celebrated book “Tending Grief”. Drawing on their practice, Barton will reflect on grief as a communal, embodied process, and on its potential to reimagine care. There will be a Q&A will the artists and the audience.
Hannah Pezzack is a British writer, editor, curator, and DJ based in The Hague. Her practice rethinks the (auto)biography as a method of critical and poetic inquiry. In particular, she examines how listening—to each other, to our environments, and to history—shapes our understanding of politics, art, and social life.
She is currently part of the curatorial team at Sonic Acts, an art, theory, and technology organisation, where she edits Ecoes magazine. Pezzack was a finalist for the 2025 Artlab Editorial Fellowship and a graduate of the Warman School. Her work has been published internationally, including in The Wire, VICE, Tubelight, NOIA, and Worms, and she is a contributor to the research project and publication Aquatic Encounters: A Glossary of Hydrofeminism. Previously, she was managing editor of Extra Extra, where she commissioned texts by Lauren Berlant, Legacy Russell, McKenzie Wark, Franco “Bifo” Berardi, among others.
Camille Sapara Barton is a writer, embodiment social designer and interdisciplinary artist who creates resources and collective experiences that prototype culture change. For over a decade, they have combined their training in political economy and somatics, alongside creative facilitation to address complex issues, enhance relational well-being and support people to flow through transitions.
Camille teaches people to reduce stress and increase resilience, while navigating change. They offer trauma informed consultancy to assist funders, cultural workers and socially engaged groups, to sustain their work in aligned ways, even under pressure. Their approach is influenced by Black Feminism, ecology and harm reduction.
Camille is the author of Tending Grief: Embodied Rituals for Holding Our Sorrow and Growing Cultures of Care in Community (2024). They designed and directed MA Ecologies of Transformation (2021 – 2023) which explored how embodiment and socially engaged art making can create change through the body, into the wider world.
Open Letters is an annual project offering artists and writers in The Hague a platform to share urgent and vulnerable messages.

De lezing wordt gevolgd door een voordracht van Camille Sapara Barton, auteur van het veelgeprezen boek “Tending Grief”. Voortbouwend op diens eigen praktijk reflecteert Barton op rouw als een gemeenschappelijk, belichaamd proces en op het potentieel ervan om zorg opnieuw te verbeelden. Aansluitend is er een Q&A met de kunstenaars en het publiek.

Al meer dan tien jaar combineren ze hun achtergrond in politieke economie en somatiek met creatieve begeleiding om complexe vraagstukken aan te pakken, relationeel welzijn te versterken en mensen te ondersteunen bij het doorlopen van transities.
Camille leert mensen stress te verminderen en veerkracht te vergroten tijdens verandering. Hen bieden traumageïnformeerde consultancy aan fondsen, culturele werkers en sociaal betrokken groepen, om hun werk op een gedragen manier voort te zetten, ook onder druk. Hun aanpak wordt gevoed door Zwart Feminisme, ecologie en schadevermindering.
Camille is de auteur van “Tending Grief: Embodied Rituals for Holding Our Sorrow and Growing Cultures of Care in Community” (2024). Hen ontwierp en leidde de MA Ecologies of Transformation (2021–2023), die onderzocht hoe belichaming en sociaal betrokken kunstpraktijk verandering kunnen bewerkstelligen via het lichaam, naar de bredere wereld.
